Memorial Fund logoPURPOSE

The purpose of Karonhiaráhstha’s Memorial Fund is to provide financial assistance to Kahnawakehró:non students who are pursuing their education and career in the fields of Medicine and other Health Care Professions, including but not limited to, Holistic Medicine and Mental Health Professions. Additionally, Karonhiaráhstha’s Memorial Fund aims provide education and awareness training in child safety, protection, first-aid and life-saving techniques to all community members.  Furthermore, the Memorial Fund is also available for bereavement relief, community recognition awards, and providing specialty equipment, programs and/or books to community organizations.

GENERATING FUNDS

Karonhiaráhstha’s Winter Wonderland is an annual fundraising event organized by the Kateri Memorial Foundation that raises money to ensure this memorial fund will remain viable well into the future. It is the wish of Karonhiaráhstha’s parents that their daughter’s memory live on and to assist as many Kahnawakehró:non students studying at all grade levels to achieve their health care educational goals in order to serve and provide the best health care services in Kahnawake.

SCHOLARSHIPS, PRIZES, & INCENTIVE BONUS

Scholarships will range from $500 to $10,000 ($CDN) depending on level of studies:

·          High School Students $500 (1 payment of $500)
·          Part-time Studies $1,000 (2 payments of $500/each)
·          Vocational Programs $1,000 (2 payments of $500/each)
·          CEGEP Programs $2,000 ($1,000/year for 2 years)
·          CEGEP Career Programs $3,000 ($1,000/year for 3 years)
·          University Bachelor $3,000 ($1,000/year for 3 years)
·          University Masters $5,000 ($2,500/year for 2 years)
·          University Doctorate $10,000 ($2,500/year for 4 years)

Scholarships will be dispersed in equal payment amounts over period of study. Installment payments will be renewed and paid out annually with proof of re-enrollment and official transcripts.  Incentive bonus pay will be issued at year’s end with official transcripts (overall 75% grade point average).  Selection committee is authorized to award monetary prizes upon group judgement/ruling.

APPLICATION CRITERIA

Students may apply yearly to Karonhiaráhstha’s Memorial Fund. Scholarships are competitive and will be based on academic standing. The following criteria applies to all students making an application:

  • Must be a Kahnawakehró:non
  • Must provide copy of valid band
  • Must have the intent to practice or work in Kahnawake upon graduation
  • Must be enrolled, full-time, in an accredited health science or health career program, and maintain full-time status for the academic year/or preparing to attend health career program
    • Provide most recent transcript and course schedule
    • Provide Letter of Acceptance from educational program of study
  • Must write a 500 – 1000 word personal essay explaining why you should receive Karonhiaráhstha’s Post-Secondary Scholarship, include educational achievements, awards & recognition, community involvement and career plans.
  • Must provide a letter of intent.
  • Must provide a social insurance number (SIN) for  T4 & RL-1 purposes
  • Must provide exactly two signed letters of recommendation, from individuals who can best describe your ability to succeed in your academic goals, such as: a high school guidance counselor; teacher; faculty member of the health profession program in which you are currently enrolled; employer; an individual not related to
  • Must be available to attend an interview upon request if required.

SELECTION

Scholarship recipients will be selected by the Kateri Memorial Foundation Karonhiaráhstha’s Selection Committee on the basis of academics, content of personal essay and letter of intent, letters of recommendation and ability of the student to maintain a balance of academics, community involvement, family life, and personal growth.  The selection will be a blind review, thereby ensuring an unbiased selection.
